OPEN WATER DIVER COURSE
At Dive California we offer both private and group classes depending on your schedule requirements and interests. One advantage to getting your Open Water Certification in San Diego with us is that we limit our class size to No more than 6 Students. Where other Dive shops go for volume, our training goal is to develop the SAFEST and MOST COMPETENT divers possible.
Weekend Class Format:
For those students who need to get certified in a short time frame, we have our weekend only format. This format consists of 2 consecutive weekends. The first weekend consists of the classroom and pool sessions, running from 8am to 5pm both days. The second weekend consists of two days of the ocean experience for a minimum of 4 dives. There is also the option of completing your final 2 dives from a boat. Ask your instructor for more information.
Weeknight Class Format:
For those with busy weekends, we offered a weeknight class over 2 weeks. This class runs at a slower pace allowing each student to fully absorb and practice the material presented. This class consists of 2 session each week from 6pm to 9pm and 2 ocean sessions from 7am - 3pm (for a total of 4-5 SCUBA dives). More time in the classroom and pool allows each student the maximum time to attain comfort and competency. More days at the ocean yields each student with more dive with the instructor.
Required Equipment:
Each student is required to have their own:
Mask, Snorkel, Fins, Boots, Gloves, Octopus Keeper, Personnel Regulator Mouthpiece (Sanitation Reasons), SSI Log Book, and Dive Bag.
If you already own you Personal Equipment Package. No problem! You will still be responsible for purchasing any item in the package the you do not own. You will receive a 5% discount of any items that you buy.
If you are purchasing all required equipment with us, you will receive a 10% discount of the items that you buy plus an additional 30 day membership to Total Immersion Divers.
Remember, We will also match any competitiors equipment price in San Diego.

We also offer Open Water Referral Program!
The Referral In Program is perfect for our out of town clients coming to San Diego. The course involves completing their academic and confined water portions in their home area, and completing the four ocean certification dives with a Dive California Instructor.
The Referral Out Program is designed for customers who prefer to complete the academic and confined water (pool) portions of the Open Water Diver course locally, and then complete their four open water certification dives in tropical waters with greater visibility.
Dive San Diego with Us
The majority of the academic work will be completed on your own. There is a DVD to watch and a book with Section Reviews that must be completed prior to the class. The information on the DVD will complement and reinforce what you have read in the book. You may also choose to do the academic work on-line (for FREE!) at www.divessi.com. Make sure to select Dive California as the shop where you will be completing your training!
During the class you'll meet with your Instructor who will review your Section Reviews and explain any information you didn't fully understand. You will also complete a fifty-question final exam based on the information you've learned. At that point we'll fit you for a wetsuit, buoyancy compensator (BCD), and get you geared up for the diving that comes next.
Following the class we'll meet at the pool to review skills before we venture out in the ocean. The open water dive training pool session normally takes four to six hours to complete, depending on the class size. As a final step in your Open Water Diver Certification, we take you on a minimum of four ocean dives conducted over at least two days. On the ocean dives we will pratice some of the skills we worked on in the pool.
At that point you're a certified diver, and welcomed at any dive shop on the planet!
Private - Beach Dive Program
The Private Beach Dive Program incorporates hours of personalized and customized Instruction to your Schedule with 4 Local San Diego Beach Dives to complete your Certification.
You may substitude a Local Point Loma Kelpbed or Coronado Island (Mexico) 2-Tank Boat Dive at additional cost of $80.00 to $129.00 per person.
The Tuition Fee to Dive California includes:
- The use of our Rental SCUBA gear during the pool dives: Wetsuit, Hood, Regulator-setup with digital dive computer, Buoyancy Control Device (BCD), Weights, Gear-bag, Tanks with Air-fills.
- Pool fee and instruction by a certified, insured and caring SCUBA Instructor.
- A personalized course schedule to fit your busy schedule.
- SSI Open Water Diver Crew Pack (Manual with DVD, Student Record Folder and Carry-bag).
- Open Water Diver Certification Card with SSI.
- 5 Open Water Certification Beach Dives in San Diego.
- Personalized equipment purchase counseling and fitting.
Your Responsibilities
- Minimum 12 years of age by the time of registration
- Reasonable good health, medical clearance by a physician may be necessary
- Able to swim at least 200 yards, a 10 minute survival float and comfortable in the water
- Provide your Personal Scuba Equipment: Swim-Suit, Towel, Silicone Scuba Mask, Open Heel Scuba Fins, Snorkel, Dive Boots 5mm or thicker, Gloves 3mm or thicker, Regulator Mouthpiece, Octopus Keeper, SSI Logbook, and Dive Bag
- A great attitude and the willingness to learn
